Will Wright’s PC game will be made into a film version by Fox and EA.

Lately, video games have been providing the initial ideas for many hit movies, and now one more is being added to that category. Twentieth Century Fox and Electronic Arts are working on turning Will Wright’s PC game “Spore” into an animated film.

Wright is probably better known for his creation of “The Sims,” but “Spore” follows along the same idea of players having control over their own world. “Spore,” released only last September, allows gamers to design their own creatures, watch them evolve, and eventually build up colonies.

Director Chris Wedge, who has already enjoyed great success along with Fox for the “Ice Age” movies, has signed on for the project. He spoke with Variety about his appreciation of the game’s creativity.

“I’m always looking for unique worlds to go to in animation,” he said. “From every perspective—visually, thematically, and comedically—the world of ‘Spore’ provides the potential to put something truly original on the screen.”

Greg Erb and Jason Oremland, who also recently worked on “The Princess and the Frog,” will write the screenplay for the film.
